I wasn't sure what to expect, but this reminds me of the type of fun children's stories that come with actual letters and maps you can open. (Harry Potter Film Wizardry is one example.) There are no actual letters or maps included here, and it is DEFINITELY not for children, but that would have been a great idea, and I've removed a star for this reason (plus there are a few typos at the end, which pulled me out of the spell of the book; also some of the articles that I would have enjoyed reading in full ran beyond the margins or were pulled into the center of the book).
Those quibbles aside, the book presents a realistic picture of what life was like for a war bride who married in haste and may or may not have repented in leisure. There are many illustrations of artifacts (articles, postcards, menus, etc.) of the period, and the two main characters are interesting. Both wish to be architects, so there are many drawings and illustrations of designs of the time. The fact that several locations are included---Virginia, Cambridge (MA), the UK---makes the appeal even wider.
Note that sex is talked about (and illustrated) freely here. That was on the one hand realistic and on the other disappointing because the book would be good to use in a high school history classroom (as a fun supplement) if that were NOT the case.
My family happened to be binge-watching Foyle's War at the time I was reading this. Fans of one will enjoy the other---just don't plan to be able to hand it to your kids.
The War Bride's Scrapbook is an enjoyable book written in a unique style. It isn't what I was expecting, but I like it. I thought it would be a more random collection of scrapbook style pages. My mother has Alzheimer's and I thought she would enjoy browsing the book since she can no longer follow a story. However, the book does tell a story, like a regular book, but is compiled scrapbook style. I hope that makes sense. After realizing what it was, I didn't expect to like it myself and I knew it wasn't for Mom. However, I did enjoy reading it.
The story is pleasant to read. It's easy to pick it up and put it down after a few minutes, if necessary, due to the format, instead of trying to finish a chapter before tucking it away at night. I like that, especially since my time is more limited these days.
I enjoyed the illustrations. I used to love to flip through old magazines and dress patterns that my grandmother stored in her spare bedroom. She rarely threw anything away. Many of the illustrations brought back those comforting memories.
I'm not particularly thrilled with the range of fonts on the pages and found some a little difficult to read. My eyes are old, though, so not everyone will share my experience. I understand that a variety of fonts and styles is important in a book designed in scrapbook style, but I think the selection wasn't always the best.
Overall, I think this is an enjoyable book. I would read another from this series. It's not for everyone, but the book certainly offers a unique experience and it's well written and illustrated.
I love this. I thought it was real towards the end. I was hoping it was, I think, because I loved the characters so much, and the story did seem quite believable.
This is such a unique, fun way to read a story - maybe it has hit me in a way like comic books hit some guys I know. I would buy more stories like this and collect them. It was so fun to see all the old vintage clothes and ads- so much is captured by those little glimpses of pop culture, it really added so much to the story. The story was bits of text and newspaper clippings that told of the war, the people, the relationships, and the passing of time.
I feel like I learned a lot about WWII and what life was like during it, in both the US and to some extent the UK and France. The letters written back and forth between the soldier and his young wife could be quite visual like that - I could easily visualize the poor French woman beating his underwear just to get a pack of cigarettes, or how horrible the smell must have been in the ship's barracks with everyone being so crowded and so many throwing up. I had not heard the word 'upchuck' in many years! The language was frequently delightful.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance or history, or vintage ads or fashion. I would think it would appeal to a broad range of people.
It's a fairly fast read, but it's also a book that is fun to revisit just to look through the pictures. Usually, when I read a romance I'm done with it, and often pass to my sisters, but this is one I think I will keep.
There's no bad language in the book -I think one small word- and though there is mention of sex, it is never too graphic and between married people. Though there's a lot about the war, there's little violence discussed and none that I think would be too graphic to disturb the average or slightly sensitive person.
Great book in perfect condition!
My husband gave me this book for Xmas because i am an avid scrapbooker. It's an incredibly inventive compendium of scrapbook techniques----gave me loads of ideas to try out in my own work. What i wasn't expecting was how compelling the story would be or how informative the book would be about WW2. The story of the daily experience of the war mostly on the home front is told through vintage memorabilia. Very original!
