Having been in Cuba and have lived in Ottawa, I enjoyed these aspects of the book. The sense of place is so well done, I felt as though I was there though it really made me question whether to go back to Cuba. The storyline is new, interesting and has different twists that go on to the last. Each time you think you are at the end another twist happens which I really enjoyed. Well worth reading and I look forward to reading her next!

The fascinating plot takes place in modern day Cuba, revealing the struggles of living in a communist country. The characters are memorable and the twists and turns of the plot make the book very entertaining. I will follow up with the sequel, The Poisoned Pawn.
The story moved at a great pace, and the Cuban culture was described well. The characters had all sorts of interesting knots that had to be untied in the somewhat extra long ending.
Modern day Cuba is unfamiliar territory for most readers. Canadian vacationers on Christmas Holiday find that all is no peace and love. A murder of a young child and a shaky alibi make for a "can't" put it down read. Looking forward to seeing Inspector Ramirez in future books.
Very rich book with many layers, but at the same time a mystery and human stories
A book that's difficult to describe and even more difficult to put down with an intricate plot and complex characters. You will be more knowledgeable about Cuba, its culture, and life under Castro when you finish. Do not read anything else for awhile, let the story stay in your head for a bit.
Let me be honest, I read this a couple of months ago and a lot of the details have faded from my mind. But I did recommend the book to others and loaned it to my dad...I did like it.

What I found most interesting about it was the setting. I don't know much about Cuba and it was a fascinating (and sad) look at the ways our policies have damaged the country.
Our book group read this, with mixed reviews. I enjoyed reading it, but as it went on, the story became a little weird.
